I am 49 years old, married and have two children who are now 20 and 16. I have lived in Leicester for my whole life, apart from 4 years spent at Nene College in Northampton where I completed a BEd degree to become a teacher.
I grew up in West Knighton and went to Overdale school and then Sir Jonathan North CC. I went onto Wyggeston Collegiate (now Regent College) to do my A levels. After spending 4 years in Northampton, I returned to Leicester where I started my teaching career at Thurnby Lodge Primary School and Taylor Primary School. I moved to Willowbrook in 1991 and have been there ever since.
I am still going to be teaching part time as I do love this, but I came to the conclusion that I didn’t want to retire having only ever worked as a teacher. I have always wanted to make my own money and do something different and now this is becoming a reality. It is scary but also very exciting.
Why An Escape Room?
Two years ago, my husband and I went to Budapest. It was a fantastic place to go. I had read up about these “escape rooms” and decided to book one. We had so much fun and really enjoyed the puzzles and challenges that as soon as we had escaped, we booked another for the next day.
Later that summer, we went to another in Edinburgh and took our daughter she also loved it. I thought at the time that it would be brilliant to run an escape room but pushed the idea to the back of my mind.
September 2015 was when that idea emerged again. My lovely friend, Lisa and I often have days out with our daughters. Well, one weekend I suggested we should go to an escape room in Nottingham and we all loved it so much that Lisa and I started to think that maybe we could do this, maybe we could start up our own escape room business.
Over the next few months, I took my family to different escape rooms and found that they all loved them too. I also found out that we are all extremely competitive!
At first, no one in our families believed we were seriously going to start our own business, but as time has progressed, they changed their minds and are now all supporting us.
I was born in Canada in 1971 but raised as a Leicestershire lass in Loughborough. As a naturalised British citizen, I enjoy the diversity that Leicester and Leicestershire provides. I really loved growing up in a market town so close to Leicester, which we visited as a family for clothes shopping, seasonal holidays, entertainment and night life.
I love Leicester and worked here for 11 years before getting a job in nearby Nottingham. However, as a family we still come to Leicester for shopping, leisure and entertainment as its where we know and enjoy.
I am married with three children, a dog and some fish, whilst being in full time work. Life is hectic and hard work keeping all the plates spinning but I thrive on the busy lifestyle I have chosen. However, I wanted to do something fun and challenging and as I love history, socialising, games and puzzles, going into business with my best friend Tracy and setting up our own escape room was the obvious answer. This venture has been so exciting and I really want others to share in the enjoyment of our escape room.
Why An Escape Room?
About BOLT OUT
We came to this idea after thinking of words associated with being locked in and trying to quickly escape. Hence, there may be bolted doors and the idea is that you bolt out of the door as quickly as you can.
Starting Bolt Out has been such a long and complicated process but we have finally done this and are looking forward to a new career and lots of fun too!
We have two rooms. We will probably change the rooms every 4-6 months depending on how it goes.
We know that we will be having a lot of competition from national companies but we hope to offer something different, local and more personal. We hope to see you soon.
